The Metropolitan Museum of Art is no longer moving forward with its planned retrospective for John Galliano that would’ve run from May 9, 2027 to Jan. 9 2028 and served as the theme of next year’s Met Gala. Galliano, who would have been only the third living fashion designer to be feted by the Met following Yves Saint Laurent in 1983 and Rei Kawakubo in 2017, released a statement on Instagram announcing his decision to pull the retrospective amid backlash over his past racist outbursts.

The Met has not yet announced how it plans to replace the Galliano exhibit, which means the 2027 Met Gala does not have a theme at this time. It’s also unclear whether the Met Gala, which historically takes place on the first Monday in May, will be delayed.
